Motovun
A hilltop town in Croatia’s Istria region is known for its stone walls, panoramic views and deep-rooted truffle culture
g
Motovun rises above the Mirna River Valley, offering clear views over vineyards, forests, and farmland that stretch across central Istria. Unlike larger tourist hubs, the town holds a slower pace, where stone houses, narrow alleys, and intact medieval walls define the local rhythm. The main square hosts cafés, a bell tower, and seasonal events that bring visitors without overwhelming the setting. Truffle-rich woodlands surround the area, drawing food enthusiasts throughout the year. Motovun also plays host to a well-known film festival, which fills the hilltop with open-air screenings and conversation. As optional part of the Ljubljana Airport to Rovinj transfer, it’s a rewarding detour into Istria’s quieter, historic interior.
